Omori Ryu

Kim's personal notes from oral instructions of his teachers:

Mae-ushiro:

1. Can shift forward like Shinden if desired, esp. in tournaments.

b. Can do with no movement of knee at all.

2. We do stab back by ear, others use uke nagashi movement (eg. ZNIR)

Yae Gaki:

1. We drop to knee and final cut, can also cut down from standing onto knee as per Eishinryu - taki otoshi

2. Same as Muso Shinden, do mae on retreat as well as forward, rather than block. Usually taught as an "official" kaewaza.

Uke Nagashi:

1. Two cuts, first avoided, second the cut, this is the usual, Haruna s. did one cut, same movements but different timing, twist to block knocks r. foot off floor and swings around.

2. Dome (stop), not uke nagashi on block... push strongly to the side with tsuba using big lift of the foot.

3. Giant lift of the left foot and let cut move off of blade down center (Kim - personal research).

Kaishaku:

1. Diff heights for diff ranks while waiting.

2. Angle depends on agreed timing of cut.

Tsuke Komi:

1. Draw toward as per mae to stop him is the usual, can also draw downward to invite strike to head, must look up at him.

2. Several ways to prepare for noto, usual is to reverse sword while moving hands together, smooth. Can place horizontally on knee while get koiguchi. Can place horizontally in the air and hold with r. hand only (MSR). Can actually reach in hakama and wipe blade.

Tsuki Kage:

1. Step out when turn to sneak body toward him is usual. Can also keep r. foot back and stomp out toward him.

2. Cut both wrists is usual, can also cut up to take only left, or down to take only right.

3. ZNIR and MSR, press blade into wrists, press his sword to your right as you stand.

Oi Kaze:

He's facing but running backward to draw. If he's running away it's Oi Kake Giri when running away don't need 2 initial steps to close distance.

Nuki Uchi

1. Haruna s. did one handed with one handed o-chiburi as per katate haya nuki

2. Hatakenaka is out, up cut, my original is draw at angle and keep drawing to use the pivot of the right shoulder to go into uke nagashi and deflect.

3. Surge forward with hips to move in, can also do as per Shinden, use pull back to get up on toes and jump forward.

=======================

Kims personal research on Mae (outside that mentioned in other sources here):

1. If hilt grabbed, pull back left hip to draw and cut around hip into arm or head. Can also do this as per hiki taoshi of Eishin Ryu, ie with left hand backing up the blade on the mune.

2. If wrist grabbed, can do the same or trap wrist with hilt over top, can grab his fingers and force him down.

3. Stop his wrist with your right foot stepping out.

4. Collapse his right knee if it comes out too fast.

5. Kick his right foot (or knee) outward with yours.

Yamauchi Ha notes (book = Yamakoshi Masaki and Tsukimoto Kazutake, 2004)

Mae to Ushiro:

1. At close distance, chikama, grab the hilt and push it back. This is usually the end of the practice due to safety considerations. You can also push the tsuka upward toward teki's center threatening with the edge.Body and footwork is the same as for the kata.

b. If teki has a short sword or tanto you can push the suigetsu with your palm. Or left hand grabs his wrist, right his hilt.

2. At a far distance toma jerk your head back to dodge and then cut his temple.

3. If you cross hands while drawing toward each other, keep the kashira on the center and push his hand away to cut his right arm.

b. Drop your hilt down on his hand to push his hilt down.

c. Drop his hilt like b then hook under his tsuka or the back of his sword and push up to the center.

d. Back up and draw your sword, hook your tsuka in his wrist, and press the blade into his neck like hiki taoshi.

4. If teki grabs for your hilt, draw to the right. He will injure his hand on your blade or jerk his hand back, as he does, thrust into his suigetsu.

5. Win with the first six inches: We say cut the eyes or neck, but the best is to cut his hand on nuki tsuke, you can do this at any distance.

Yae Gaki:

1. You can finish on the first noto, this is still called Yae Gaki.

2. He actually cuts for the body as he is injured, you move the body and he goes for the leg. Cover the right, left or top of the leg. For right or left stick the kissaki into the ground hard. For the top of the leg, drop onto your left knee and place the blade, edge to him, on the top of your thigh.

3. Press down the hilt to control the valley. I now have no idea what this is.

Note: you may do this technique with a wakizashi and staying on your knees. There may be a crowd so don't stand up. He likely has a wakizashi too if indoors.

Uke Nagashi:

1. Not a variation but parry with the strength of the legs since you're coming up from the ground.

2. As you block, move into ganmen ate to strike his face and deflect at the same time.

Kaishaku:

Cut along the collar.

A one handed cut will find it's way between the neck bones.

If you are too far away,  move your right foot up to the left, don't let him see you move your left foot to adjust as this will make him nervous. Also don't show him your shadow for the same reason.

Kaishaku vs Uchikubi. Again, need to re-read the book.

Tsuke Komi: (oikiri)

Yamauchi = sword blade held vertically, bounce his attack back with the tsuba.

All cuts stop with the hands at shoulder height, using the tsuba as a shield.

Chiburi is as would be done on horseback to protect the horse's neck.

1. Tsuba as a shield, imagine a cone from the tsuba back to cover your body. If he hits down on the tsuba it makes your cut stronger.

b. If you are both thrusting to chudan, keep your tsuba higher and his sword will glance off as you thrust him.

2. As many cuts as needed, when he falls move back to furi kaburi but also to move out of his way as he will fall toward his wound (old teaching).

Tsuki Kage

1. Leave sword up so he cuts himself. Tip to the left, hilt right means he pushes his wrists down on the blade.

2. Push teki's sword aside by pulling back the left hip and cut with kissaki to his right temple.

3. Let him hit the hilt which will rotate your kissaki into his right temple. You may lose fingers.

Oi Kaze

Can't stop and draw or won't catch teki, must cut on the last step.

1. Break the rhythm of your steps toward him, small stutter steps or he will catch your rhythm. To catch and break rhythm is very important.

Nuki Uchi:

1. Move just the right or the left knee, this is not a variation but it is to avoid his cut down the center. If you are standing you can move back.

b. If you both draw at the same time or he's a bit ahead, push his hands aside with yours or go under his hands with your hilt, at any rate, control and hit him with the kissaki very quickly.
